Meeting Workers Where They Are

Santa Barbara County is known for its agricultural bounty, supported and harvested by migrant workers who primarily speak Spanish, or an indigenous dialect, Mixteco. To fight COVID-19 in this community, Children and Family Resource Services, in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Promotores Network, went directly to the fields to educate workers and provide protective masks and COVID-19 tests. They also got the word out about vaccination through Spanish and Mixteco-language outreach on social media, radio and TV, and by finding locations for vaccine clinics where people already had connections and felt safe such as their grocery store, or a local church. Their strategy was successful with 143 community members getting fully vaccinated and boosted.
